Anyang, Sep. 20, 2016 - LS Cable & System announced that it has received a special ID number (AA3001) from the Aluminum Association (AA) of the US for a new high-strength aluminum material that it had developed.
 
LS Cable & System is the only company in Korea that has been granted an ID number for an invented alloy from the AA. This is the second such certification for the company since it received its first for a non-heat-treated aluminum alloy (AA6024) in 2002. There are now more than 500 AA certifications in the world with 19 granted to Asian companies.
 
The new AA3001 aluminum alloy includes several metallic elements, such as copper and manganese, to add strength to the alloy. Due to advances in the aircraft and automotive industries, numerous alloy products have been invented but AA3001 was developed more specifically for the outdoor units and main bodies of home and industrial air-conditioning systems, heat exchangers and air-conditioning units installed in vehicles.  
 
AA3001 boasts the world’s best corrosion resistance. As its properties were strengthened so that it will not be corroded by humidity and chemicals, the life of products to which it is applied will be more than doubled. As a result, leakage of refrigerant in the outdoor units of air-conditioners will be greatly reduced.
 
Also, as it is high-strength, its thickness can be greatly decreased, and thus the size of the air-conditioner parts of vehicles can be reduced. This will also help reduce the overall weight of the vehicles.
 
“Unlike patents, the internationally certified alloy number can be registered one year after the product began to be sold. That is, emphasis is placed on effectiveness,” said Dong-Wook Kim, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of LS Cable & System. “LG Electronics air-conditioners with AA3001 are already released, and its excellent quality is proven, and we expect that its sales to overseas home appliance makers and automotive parts makers will increase.”    
 
The US Aluminum Association provides industry standards and industrial statistics, and provides expert knowledge to policymakers. In Asia, Japan has 14 AA certifications, China 3 and Korea 2.
