■ ICT and IoT trigger cross-industry convergence and combination, leading to global war on standards

LSIS Chairman Ja-kyun Koo delivered a keynote speech at the 35th ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 
Seoul General Assembly, hosted by South Korea for the first time, at Lotte Hotels & Resorts Seoul in Sogong-dong, on
September 16.

According to a representative of the company, Chairman Koo spoke on the theme of International Standards and the Role 
of the Private Sector, and stressed the importance of international standards with regard to the spread of solutions
designed to enhance energy efficiency.

The ISO is an international standards organization that was formed to discuss core technology elements, standards, and 
standardization across global industries. Notably, South Korea hosted the ISO General Assembly for the first time in 52 
years since joining the ISO in 1963.

Chairman Koo stated that ICT and IoT have brought about a great paradigm shift in the energy industry, and that the 
industry should rapidly and widely disseminate energy efficiency enhancement technologies at the global level by 
establishing international standards.

“Just 20 years have passed since the emergence of the Digital Age, and smartphones have been around for only seven 
or eight years. Digitalization requires compatibility between individual devices, boosting the importance of technological 
standards. But now, we are seeing a shift from the Digital Age to a new era of ICT and IoT. Diverse cross-industry 
convergence and technology combination are taking place far beyond individual devices and technologies, triggering a
global war on standards.” 

Koo further emphasized: “ICT and IoT are bringing the convergence of technologies such as smart grids to the energy
industry, triggering a paradigm shift. As an alternative to climate change response, the energy sector, which is frequently
blamed for generating over two-thirds of global greenhouse gas emissions, should establish international standards of 
technology in order to disseminate energy efficiency enhancement solutions as rapidly and as widely as possible.

Chairman Koo went on to say: “The only truth that never changes in this world is the truth that everything changes. We 
must face and tackle the great tasks of our times, such as IoT, big data, climate change response, and the emergence 
of the new age of ‘convergence and combination’. In this regard, international standards are the guidelines for moving the 
industry forward.”
