■ Delivers keynote speech on smart grid at the largest forum held by ADB in the Philippines on June 17
■ Plans to attend GSCF Board meeting in Tokyo on June 18 to propose Korean technologies such as SG Station


LSIS Chairman & CEO Ja-kyun Koo is accelerating his global move to open up the future of smart energy centered on Korean technology in the Philippines and Japan on June 17 and 18.

LSIS disclosed that its Chairman & CEO Ja-kyun Koo attended the 10th Asia Clean Energy Forum (ACEF) held by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Manila, Philippines on June 17 and presented a keynote speech titled ‘Smart Grid: Futuring Smart Energy’.

This year’s ACEF, the largest forum held by ADB on an annual basis, attracted 1,200 participants including high-level policy makers in recycled energy and energy efficiency, business developers, investors and technical experts from more than 60 countries seeking challenges and opportunities in the clean energy sector.

In his speech, Koo emphasized the need for smart energy technology, including smart grid, as power efficiency has become an important issue in many fast-growing Asian countries.

“In line with the development of their economies, developing Asian countries are experiencing rapid population growth, industrialization and urbanization, as well as rapid growth. For these countries, the management of ever increasing peak power demand will be an important challenge for maintaining this growth,” Koo pointed out.

“While there are two solutions, either increasing the power supply or increasing the efficiency of the existing power infrastructure, what we need to do is diversify the energy sources and increase power efficiency in terms of economic and environmental factors. Smart energy technology, which optimizes energy usage by converging new & renewed energy, and energy storage systems, and the demand response to the existing power network, will be the clear alternative,” he explained.

Koo then presented Korean smart energy technologies including new & renewed energy, marine photovoltaic systems, ESS (Energy Storage System), HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current), EMS (Energy Management System), and demand response technologies.

In addition, noting that many Asian countries consist of mountainous and island terrain, Koo proposed energy self-sufficiency based on the micro-grid led by the Korean Government as a new business model, and emphasized that smart energy will be the new driving force behind the economic development of Asian countries.

Since smart energy still faces many obstacles related to policy, regulation and business hegemony, Koo also encouraged the professionals attending the ACEF to take active steps toward government-private sector cooperation.

Before presenting his keynote speech, Koo met with top officials of ADB including Vice President Bindu N. Lohani, Director General of the Regional and Sustainable Development Department Carmela Locsin, and Technical Advisor Tyrrell Duncan and exchanged opinions on ADB’s plans for investment in the energy sector.

The following day, June 18, Koo flew to Tokyo to attend the Global Smart Grid Federation (GSGF) board meeting as the chairman of the Korea Smart Grid Association.

As a former vice-chairman of the GSGF, Koo encouraged South East Asian countries to participate in the GSGF, and introduced the energy new industry policy of the Korean Government as the keynote speaker at the board meeting attended by the chairmen of smart grid associations worldwide.

He particularly noted KEPCO’s presentation of SG Station, which received the Excellence Award at the International Smart Grid Technology Contest, pointing out that it was a joint project executed by KEPCO and small companies with excellent technology, and an exemplary case of Korea’s smart grid technology. He also suggested that cooperating with Korean companies armed with advanced technological competitiveness would create high synergy.
