■ Joint research on new materials and new technologies in the field of eco-friendliness and power transmission
■ Technical cooperation in HVDC, power grid safety diagnosis, etc.
LS Cable & System announced on February 24 that the company signed an ‘MOU for developing technologies for realizing carbon neutrality’ with Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI).
The two sides agreed to cooperate to develop new technologies and materials in the field of eco-friendliness and power transmission. Fields of cooperation include safety diagnosis technology for power grids as well as joint research on superconducting transmission and distribution power devices and HVDC (High-Voltage Direct Current).
The superconducting cable is a representative eco-friendly cable with almost no power loss during transmission. LS Cable & System commercialized it for the first time in the world in 2019, developed a next-generation product that increased power transmission by more than 20% in 2021, and is about to bring it to market for the first time in Korea in the first half of this year.
HVDC is also expanding with a focus on long-distance and renewable energy power grids, as it has low loss during transmission and can transmit large-capacity power. Since electromagnetic waves are not generated and the size and number of substations and transmission towers can be reduced, the environmental impact can also be minimized.
Collaboration in power grid safety diagnosis technology research using AI and big data technology will also be a reality. LS Cable & System is expanding its ‘cable safety diagnosis service’ business, which diagnoses the overheating condition and lifespan of cables in industrial facilities, to offshore wind power and submarine cables.
Lee In-ho, CTO of LS Cable & System, said at the signing ceremony, “We will contribute to the realization of a carbon-neutral nation by securing and upgrading future power technology in cooperation with the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute.”
Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (President Myeong Seong-ho) is a government-funded research institute under the Ministry of Science and ICT. KERI conducts R&D and international testing and certification for heavy electric equipment in the field of advanced electric technology.
